Through the study of mission history, we can come to appreciate the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. This article explores, in a tentative way, answers to questions as to its meaning. It examines mission theology in the decades since the end of Vatican II. Dialoguing with the past means letting the missionaries of the past tell us how they saw what they were doing and why -- their work and their spirituality. But it also means listening to the people responding to the missionaries, recognising the baggage from the past and being ready to ask forgiveness. In this way we can be proud of past accomplishments even while realising their limitations.
