    Abstract

The Company of St Teresa of Jesus (Teresians) established a community at New Norcia in 1904 at the invitation of the second abbot, Rev Fulgentius Torres. The high hopes that the community would establish a college for Aboriginal girls were not realized, and by 1910 all but one of the Spanish missionary women had left the mission. The article explores the tensions in terms of missionary identity, Spanish identity and the role of the Sisters who were 'not monks'.
