    Abstract

This paper sets out a schema for understanding different theological approaches to a central doctrine within the Roman Catholic Church: the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The paper argues that theological discourse on this topic has followed either a "centripetal" or a "centrifugal" trajectory, with the latter now dominating post-Vatican II sacramental theology. It is hoped that this paper makes some sense of the often complex and varied approaches which theologians have taken in elucidating this notion.
