    Abstract

The work of René Girard invites us to re-imagine a ‘religious – secular’ interactivity within the social space in a way that is released from the violent dualisms of the ‘sacred/profane.’ Earlier in the twentieth century, Dietrich Bonhoeffer found himself considering precisely the same task, and suggested directions for a remarkably positive theology of the church-state relation, even as the inherited forms of both church and state were collapsing around him. This paper will explore the Girardian scenario about church and state becoming rivalrous ‘doubles’ – whether it be secular utopic projects doubling religious narratives of redemption, or historical churches doubling the state as parallel yet purer societies – and will suggest theological resources from the writings of Bonhoeffer by which a non-rivalrous church-state relationality, both mutually-constituting and mutually-limiting, can be described.
