    This contribution to a conference on pneumatology explores its possible connection to Australian identity. A constant point of reference throughout to paper is A D Hope’s poem ‘Australia’, which was not reprinted in the paper itself because of copyright concerns at the time (though it is now readily accessible on the internet). Was the Spirit of God in the land before de Quiros called this place the South Land of the Holy Spirit? In what sense can the land be called ‘land of the Holy Spirit’?
