    Abstract

This essay looks at the mission-vision of the Decree Ad Gentes, one of the final documents to be promulgated by the Second Vatican Council in 1965. The vision of chapter I is placed in the context of the de-colonisation process of the 1950s and 1960s, the resurgence of Asian and African cultures. With the end of "colonial mission", the Council returned to the patristic Trinitarian vision of God's mission; conversion of "the other" is replaced by "dialogue-in-witness". While many of the practical proposals of the Decree are now outdated, the mission-vision of the Council continues to inspire. Fifty years of dialogue-in-witness has altered the "ad gentes" frame of Vatican II into an "inter gentes" frame as seen in the documents of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences.
