This article chronicles the life of Fr Frank Lombard, a charismatic Melbourne priest who popularised the Young Christian Workers Movement (YCW), particularly though sporting activities. The YCW rally in 1943 attracted a crowd of some 30,000 people, with up to 4,000 youth members. The YCW also vigorously promoted the co-operative movement in Victoria. The author describes the clash between Lombard (supported by the auxiliary Catholic Bishop Justin Simonds) and BA (Bob) Santamaria (supported by Archbishop Mannix), who wanted to use the YCW in his anti-communist campaign. The YCW trained people for independent lay judgment and initiative in industrial and political affairs, and refused to be conscripted by Santamaria.
