This study examines how various measures of parish vitality provide a greater understanding of the expressions of vitality found in Australian Catholic parishes. The research expands the existing literature about activities, programs and characteristics of parish life that influence parish vitality.

A theological framework centered on the concept of Church as communion and sociological research done on Australian and overseas Catholic parishes are used to propose eight measures as indicators of vitality in Catholic parishes.

Data was collected in ten parishes using a qualitative mixed methods approach.

The findings revealed that empowering lay leadership, strong community bonds and diversity in spiritual, social and outreach aspects were some of the major contributors to vitality. A great diversity was seen in participating parishes in expressing different aspects of vitality, along with a critical need for diocesan support to sustain parish vitality through strategic leadership planning and ongoing collaboration.
