    Abstract

This essay analyses the script of an oral history of the rulers of Sikka district in central Flores, eastern Indonesia using tools from biblical exegesis: literary types, underlying themes, narrative structure, canonical interpretation. By doing so, the author discovers a "subversive counter-narrative" embedded in the whole, which questions the patriarchal ideology and mind-set of the local culture. The essay underlines key issues in both oral history and its interpretation in a time of cultural upheaval.
