After looking at divergent ways of interpreting history, the author focuses on the "hidden" massacre of 1965/1966 in Indonesia, on an area not covered in historiography, namely the district of Maumere in Flores in the Province of NTT. The author then introduces a few writings on the subject, van Klinken's study of the murder of Jan Djong in Maumere, Mery Kolimon's study of the mentality of the perpetrators, including her father, Karen Campbell-Nelson's study of survivors, Justin Wejak's analysis of the politics of fear, and Yosef Keladu and Martin Daven's analyses of the 1965/1966 massacres through the work of Hanna Adrendt. As the two films of Joshua Oppenheimer show (The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2015) the climate of fear and retribution still restricts such exposures such that true reconciliation is not yet possible.
