Church History cannot be read in a vacuum: the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us. We simply cannot ignore 'the amongst us', the context in which the Word appears and in which the Word is still proclaimed. We need to see as much of the whole context as possible, and to recognise that the Council came at a unique moment. So this paper will seek to review the century of Vatican II, the twentieth century.
