    Abstract

This talk was delivered at the workshop on leadership in Melbourne attended by the members of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union of Vanuatu, as part of their visit to commemorate the memory of Presbyterian Deaconesses Catherine Ritchie and Amy Skinner who visited the New Hebrides in 1944 to explore the possibilities of missionary work with women. Amy Skinner subsequently returned and with local organisers established branches of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. The talk sets this work in the context of Australian involvement in the Pacific and missionary expansion in the 19th century.
