Abstract

Rev Sir Clarence Irving Benson (1887-1980), has been described as an ‘eloquent and persuasive preacher, wise administrator...distinguished author and journalist, courageous social reformer, champion of the aged and poor, spiritual counsellor.' Behind the hagiography, however, there is also the autocratic leader who preferred to lead by fiat rather than consultation and whose supercilious manner often put off his ministerial colleagues. A tall man with a commanding, even austere, presence, Benson was something of a polarising figure within Australian Methodism but undoubtedly one of its most significant leaders in the first half of the twentieth-century. He belonged to an earlier imperial age more oriented toward Great Britain than the Asian and Pacific world that would dominate the second half of the century. He was perhaps the last of his type – the pulpit prince with a broad public audience and a media presence that would be the envy of most ministers in today’s post-Christendom Australia. Yet in pointing the city to Christ he seemed not to discern clearly the direction that Christ would take the Church in the challenging period ahead.
