    Abstract

In Luther’s early eucharistic theology there is a strong emphasis on communio. For a brief time Luther recovered something of the richness of the early church’s theology and practice of holy communion as the communion of saints, participating in Christ and becoming his body in which all members truly love and care for one another. Because of later controversies, Luther became focussed on other issues. In its rich and pastoral teaching on the meaning of communio this sermon of 1519 stands far above Luther’s subsequent treatises on the sacrament.
