This essay addresses the lack of scholarly attention given to rhetoric in the Apocalypse to John. It argues that the rhetorical tool of ekphrasis is a helpful lens through which to read the Apocalypse and uncover the desired effect of the text. Such a reading highlights the role the visions play as an essential part of the author's argument.
