Johann Baptist Metz revived the concept of 'political theology', even though it had been discredited by the conservative German jurist Carl Schmitt in the 1930s. The chapter reassesses Metz's contribution, examines a new interpretation of Schmitt, and goes on to show how ecumenical engagement in the process of reconciliation in Northern Ireland is a version of political theology.
