    Abstract

Leading a church through cultural and missional shifts can be a minefield requiring a blend of pastoral and leadership skills alongside the clarity of vision for the future. Excited by the latest literature on missional church life,a pastoral leader needs to ask some important questions before embarking upon the challenge of leading the people of God through into a new paradigm of ministry. However, the trail of major change in church life is littered with casualties, contributing a not-insignificant number to the fastest growing group of Christians in the Western World — those who no longer belong to a church community, whilst still barely touching the increasing numbers of unchurched people in the community. Change leadership involves consideration of the blend of pastoral, theological, missional, and sociological thinking, and a deep awareness of one’s own calling and identity. In this chapter, four key questions are identified which provide a prism through which the challenges of change leadership in a local congregation can be evaluated, giving insights to both the responses of the people and the motivations and intentions of a pastoral leader. By asking questions such as these, a pastoral leader is enabled to reflect upon their focus in a pastoral, missional, and evangelistic perspective.
