    An era of historical critical engagement with synoptic gospel parables conscientiously sought to avoid the excesses of "artificial" allegorical interpretations. Yet this tradition also developed a palimpsest of hypothetical readings of context, unwittingly shifting the site of allegorical interpretation from text to context.
