This article comprises a new reading of the extended, almost exclusively Elohistic, passage Gen 20-22:19. It focuses upon the narrative account of Abraham's relationship with his two sons and am ambiguity about Isaac's paternity to conclude that the test set in Gen.22:1-2 can be categorised as a test of Abraham's allegiance to YHWH and to the divine covenant. In the light of David Carr's identification of Gen.22:15-18 as one of a group of three passages inserted late and testifying to Abraham's faithful observance of Torah, this article considers the function of Gen.22:15-18 in the larger passage and, engaging with recent work by R. Christopher Heard and Mark G. Brett, the extent to which its late insertion might be reflective of the concerns and interests of Persian period editors.
