Abstract

This article argues for a reevaluation of contemporary historiographical models of clerical avoidance of women. It includes a survey of the variety of institutional forms of religious life for women that emerged from the twelfth century, and the multiple ways that men continued to support women's religious vocation as monks, canons or secular priests during the high and late Middle Ages. The authors focus attention on women's creative agency in negotiating these relationships, and how men's engagement with religious women could have a marked influence on their own spiritual lives.
