On Monday 2 March 2009, like most if not all inhabitants of Victoria with mobile phones, I recieve the following text message from the Victorian Police: 'Extreme weather expected tonight (Monday) and tomorrow. High winds and fire risk. Listen to the ABC local radio for emergency update. Do not reply to this message.' The following day the sky is overcast, a rarity in this summer and early autumn of ongoing drought in south-eastern Australia, and as I write I have one ear to any change in the wind. Even for those of us in the city, there is a sense of foreboding. Just over three weeks earlier, on a day that reached 46.4 degrees Celsius in Melbourne, with a strong hot northerly wind that shifted towards the South as a cool change came late in the day, a firestorm broke upon towns in the bush to the north and east of the city. More than two hundred humans died and countless domestic animals and wild life. Tens of thousands of hectares of bush were burned. Some of the fires are still going as I write and friends in affected areas have had to decide whether to stay in their homes or retreat to the safety of the city.
