    Abstract

This article explores the concept of wisdom in the Biblical traditions, recognizing an ambiguous attitude towards wisdom. There is perhaps a wisdom in knowing the limits of wisdom. What then might it mean to learn to read scripture in a way that enables a growth in wisdom? The hermeneutical principle proposed by James McClendon is discussed, followed by an exploration of how we might learn from experience, especially through the quality of our respectful listening. This in turn leads to the kind of insight and understanding which both knows and knows the limits of our knowing.
