Abstract

The Benedictine mission of New Norcia in Western Australia enjoyed an enviable reputation for success in the nineteenth century, and Bishop Rosendo Salvado continues to be remembered as a visionary founder by the local Aboriginal people as well as by scholars. But in accounts of New Norcia to date, Salvado’s successor has been identified with a turn away from the mission and work with Aboriginal people.
Drawing on internal Spanish documents and re-considering English-language sources, this article argues that the second abbot Fulgentius Torres did not intend to repudiate the missionary work, but that changes that distances the Benedictines from the local Aboriginal people were a tragic and unintended consequence of policies that aimed to strengthen monastic observance.
