This essay explores the theme of hope as it is expressed in the official liturgies of the Uniting Church of Australia, and then discusses the question of clerical liberty: to what extent are members of the Uniting Church clergy free to depart, not from the form but the context of the liturgies? And when they do, how often do they transgress into culturally-acceptable norms but thereby under-play the distinctively Christian witness of hope?
