This chapter addresses the theme of eastern and western traditions of Christianity responding to the demands of postmodernity. It argues, from a western perspective, that eastern Christianity has much to teach the West in the emerging postmodern climate, characterised as it is by a 'retreat from the word', a failure of the mechanistic worldview and a disintegration of the autonomous self. While warning against any uncritical theological adaptation to what is perceived as postmodern, the chapter argues that Eastern Orthodox theology anticipates some aspects of the postmodern, and so may offer a more holistic, interconnected view of reality than has been the case in the modern (post-Enlightenment) theology of the West. The important thing for westerners is neither to ignore nor to colonise eastern theology, and to try our best not to misrepresent it.
