The article argues that, although Exodus 32–34 is a complex piece that underwent a compositional process, its various parts have been put together skilfully to form a whole that is more than the sum of the parts. The result is a story that functions as an important piece of torah or catechesis at a crucial juncture in the Torah storyline—the golden calf apostasy. The thrust of the story is not so much whether the crisis triggered by this apostasy can be resolved but how it is resolved.
