Pope Benedict's social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, was keenly awaited in 2009 as the Church's formal response to the havoc of the Global Financial Crisis. Pope Benedict focused Catholic thinking on economic and social issues, and critiqued neoliberal economics for sidelining major issues of social justice and equity. He extols Pope Paul's Development of Peoples as the compass for today, reaffirms the Church's duty to debate these matters, and calls for reforms, including by extending cooperative forms of ownership.
