Abstract

This book traces ideas of social justice from the Bible and New Testament, and explores the implications for our contemporary world, seeing the mission of the Church calling lay people especially to the task of social transformation. The text outlines key Catholic social principles, and offers a critique of capitalism, highlighting the Church's efforts to promote social reform in Australian history. It then focuses on the Church's response to the Global Financial Crisis, and Pope Benedict's encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. It concludes with sections on Indigenous issues, issues of war and peace, refugees and asylum seekers, and environment.
