This chapter outlines the development of the Uniting Church in Australia and notes that, at the denomination's inauguration in 1977, it was regarded by many as being an ecclesial beacon of light and hope. IN the years since, however, that hope has trended towards despair, with the UCA being riven by divisions, factionalisms and bitter controversies. However, the author insists on the theological underpinning that lay at the foundataion of the UCA - that hope is of God, and that there remains reason still to hope.
