Abstract

This article explores particular episodes in the Gospel of Luke which illustrate the gospel writer's theological assertion that in Jesus Christ, a new humanity is made possible. This insight becomes the basis for a re-definition of pastoral care and a revised approach to pastoral ministry in the local congregation. This is offered as a way of restoring the ministry of pastoral care in a context where, increasingly, with diminishing numbers and ageing membership, congregations consider themselves inadequately resourced to carry out pastoral ministry.
