Abstract

This essay explores the characters of Martha and Mary as they are presented in the Gospels of Luke and John. It compares and contrasts their characterisation within the narrative world of the Gospels, in the symbolic world of the texts, in the world behind the text, and in the world in front of the text. It concludes that the two sisters share a similar characterisation in both Gospels.
