Abstract

In this chapter, I shall, first, introduce Eric D. Hirsch’s distinction between meaning and significance. I will point to the main problem which his theory creates in biblical exegesis, and suggest its refinement in the light of Umberto Eco’s concept of intentio operis. Then, and very briefly, I would like to look at the meaning and significance of the biblical passage which I have chosen to exemplify my theoretical discussion, and which is Gen. 21.1-7. Since the topic of our discussion revolves around the concept of the literal sense, I will suggest its tentative definition, but, at the same time, I will raise some objections to that concept.
