This study looks at Joseph Ratinger's essay, his contribution to a published discussion with Jürgen Habermas on pre-political morality in a liberal state. The author concentrates upon the relationship between religion and culture in Ratzinger's theology, comparing his later work with that of conciliar (1962-1965) and the immediate post-conciliar (1966) periods, but also Ratzinger's statement on culture and relativism delivered to the Chairmen of the Asian Bishops' Conferences (1993), and his address at the University of Regensburg (2006).
The author notes that the fundamental frame of Ratzinger's thought has been clear and consistent since the 1950s. Brilliant in his own patristic field, Ratzinger gives no evidence of having learnt anything from Asia or Africa, with the consequence, his thought is mono-culturally Western. Therein lies the strength and the weakness of his thought. Through this essay the author contrasts this way of thinking with the inclusive, dialogal theology of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences.
