Abstract

In line with Bernard Lonergan this essay attempts to "listen to all the voices" in secular society as experienced in Muslim Indonesia. Accentuating the positive without neglecting the negative, two concepts are viewed from the perspective of Indonesian Islam: liberalism and pluralism. While the secular is commercialising religion in urban areas and via cyberspace, and pluralism is bringing with it social and cultural fluidity which has given rise to fundamentalist reactions, these challenges have also brought liberal and plural Islamic movements to the fore.
