Abstract

Postmodernism is often seen as an enemy of the church and a threat to the enduring message of the gospel and the authority of the Bible. This essay proposes that, for all its undoubted faults, postmodernism has the potential to refresh Christian theology, reframe biblical hermeneutics, and enliven the Church’s mission in the multi-cultural society of today. Postmodernism has been roundly criticised for its rejection of objective and universal ideas of truth. It is a movement that is said to lead to relativism, confusion and uncertainty among believers. The paper identifies a range of Christian thinkers who challenge postmodernism’s detractors; then the paper outlines the principal features of postmodernism, demonstrates its potential compatibility with Lutheran theology and guiding hermeneutical principles, and concludes with a clarion call to re-image God in relational terms suggesting embrace, inclusion and hospitality.
