Half a century on, the Santamaria Movement - the Split in the Australian Labor Party and The Catholic Church is a painful memory that has left a unique impression on Australia's religious and political culture. Even as the resentment of those years left some lasting legacies, the Santamaria Movement can be seen as a significant attempt to respond to contemporary social, political and cultural trends that might be loosely identified as those of 'modernity', in the alien Antipodes.
