This paper addresses the importance of a postfoundationalist approach to scripture for the discipline of practical theology. It highlights the various difficulties which the discipline has had in its relationship to scripture. Although the discipline itself in its various methodological proposals emphasises scripture, it often fails to engage with it adequately. These issues stem from questions about best usage and understanding of scripture inherited from foundationalist difficulties. A postfoundationalist approach, which takes many of the concerns of practical theology into account, might provide one approach for a more sustained and detailed engagement with scripture. By examining the proposals of Stanley Grenz and Wentzel van Huyssteen a postfoundationalist approach which moves beyond conservative and liberal debates and embraces a critical realist approach, might provide an impetus for this engagement.
