This thesis is a study of Mother Xavier Maguire, an Irish woman, who occupied prominent positions in the Sisters of Mercy there and founded the Convent of Mercy, Geelong. It is an attempt to redress the lack of acknowledgement of the contribution such women religious to the life of the Catholic Church in Australia.
