Abstract

Keith Clements is acknowledged to be one of the leading liv- ing interpreters of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life and theology. This essay explores two of the major themes of Clements’ work on Bonhoeffer— ecumenism and the nature of patriotism—with a view to elucidating these aspects of Bonhoeffer’s theological work. The paper draws on Clements’ recently published autobiography Look Back in Hope: An Ecumenical Life (Eugene: Wipf & Stock, 2017) to consider the ways that Clements’ own life story and theological commitments reflect Bonhoef- fer’s inspiration.
