Recalling the pioneering pastoral and catechetical contribution over four decades by Yosef Lalu, a key diocesan priest in Ende Archdiocese, Indonesia, this paper brings out how Yosef Lalu's strategic thinking brought about a paradigmatic change in parochial ministry throughout the diocese as it moved from ministry centred around the priest and his male parish council and the parish church, to a parish as a communion of communities, a network of families who gather weekly in Basic Ecclesial Communities. Yosef Lalu's contribution to pastoral renewal was holistic: structural (basic communities), catechetical (programmes for every occasion written for Base Communities, parishes and schools from primary to tertiary levels), homeletical (clearly the most outstanding preacher of his generation, making vivid use of the narrative). As Yosef Lalu's books on pastoral work, catechetics and homelectic are available in Indonesia, this paper brings out how Yosef, although born as the elderest son in a prominent family, lived an utterly simple lifestyle, a man for others with positive relationships with everyone, and that this is his lasting contribution to his pioneering a new way of being Church. For Yosef Lalu, the academic, the personal and the pastoral were one.
