Manikay (song) performed by Yolŋu people in Australia’s remote Arnhem Land abounds with intricate perspectives on death. Passed down the generations for centuries, ideas of death are interwoven in complex song narratives and images. Performances of manikay shape life through particular foci of ontological thought and religious beliefs, becoming tangible and relevant in performances concerned with birth, initiation, celebration and education.
