Abstract

This article examines the identification of the People’s Gate in Jeremiah 17:19 and argues that it refers to a city gate rather than a temple gate. Analysis of the composition history of Jeremiah 17:19-25 suggests that it is a post-exilic composition drawing on earlier Jeremianic material. Previously this composition history has supported the conclusion that the People’s Gate is a temple gate as a supplement to the sermon in Jer 7:1-12. This article argues that rhetorically a city gate is preferred to a temple gate in Jer 17:19-25 and that parallels to Jer 19:1-15 provide a plausible explanation for this location. Finally, a possible identification of the gate deriving from the location in the Valley of the Son of Ben Hinnom in Jer 19:1 will be suggested.
