In this chapter, the author traces and examines the gradual emergence and development in Newman of a Catholic understanding of the role of the Magisterium. He explores the relationship in Newman's thought between doctrine, devotions and theology. Also, the author considers Newman's attitude toward the doctrine of papal infalibility.
