- PublicationEngaging the Dance:Exploring Leadership and Understanding God as Triune(2015-11) Francis, CeciliaThis thesis juxtaposes social Trinitarian theology, referring to four key systematicians, contemporary leadership theories and extensive interviews with Christian leaders. It interrogates the extent to which the leaders’ theology animates their leadership, maps the space between Christian doctrine and leadership style, and proposes avenues for integrative engagement and interdisciplinary dialogue.

- PublicationFrom Marginalization to Leadership: Re-shaping a theology and praxis of Mission(Australian and New Zealand Society for Theological Studies, 2017) Reynolds, RobynThis essay critically evaluates traditional and current understandings and practice of evangelisation and mission. The discussion centres around the contexts and reasons for exclusion--and sometimes inclusion--of persons, especially women, who are generally dismissed or overlooked in mission discourse. The essay outlines a fresh approach to a theology and praxis of mission. Arguments proposed are supported by a wide range of mainly feminist and indigenous writers. While the issues raised relate to mission globally, an Australian (and in particular a Catholic) perspective is evident and important. Regarding discourse and action around the mission enterprise and spirituality, the author proposes a radical shift in the conversation, and in the conversation participants. The reflection on the Syrophoenician woman's meeting with Jesus flags such a spirituality. It is suggested that this re-imagined approach to evangelisation and mission will best come from the marginalised themselves, who, as suggested by the Wadeye example in particular, are already showing prophetic leadership.
- PublicationKingdom Communities: Shining the light of Christ through Faith, Hope and Love.(Wipf & Stock, 2018-10-07) Phelan, Dean; Menzies, AndrewAn inspirational and compelling exploration of a spreading phenomenon that is breaking out in the most unlikely of places. As attendance in churches is in plateau or freefall, small and growing numbers of people are turning to creative and relationally connected communities that shine the light of Christ with great effect and generosity. Kingdom Communities: Shining the light of Christ through faith, hope and love examines the rise of this diverse and organic movement that is popping up in neighbourhoods, regional towns, urban slums, brothels, aged care villages, schools, churches ... indeed anywhere! Using multiple case studies from across the region, Kingdom Communities explores this growing movement historically, biblically and theologically and uncovers the power of distributed networks for holistic Christian mission. In our age of disruption and rapid discontinuous change that has shaken religious institutions to their core, this book is both a challenge and major injection of hope for those who are passionate about the kingdom of God, Christian leadership, the future of ministry and the relational communities that the world desperately needs.

- PublicationPioneering Leadership: Historical Myth-Making, Absence and Identity in the Churches of Christ in Victoria(Association for the Journal of Religious History, 2017) Handasyde, KerrieThis article explores the role of historiography in the developing identity of congregationally autonomous churches by examining the process and meaning behind the historical myth‐making associated with pioneering church leadership. In the absence of a clerical hierarchy or recognised historical expertise, four competing claims for the title of “first evangelist” emerged in the Churches of Christ (Disciples of Christ) denomination in colonial Victoria. Each of these claims is critically analysed in the light of rapidly developing church identity, the work of the evangelists in the 1860s, the influence of Australian nationalism, and historiographical portrayals which sought to make these four men heroes even in their absence. Finally the article examines absence of another kind — historiographical omission — and the question of the heroic in denominational church history.

- PublicationStrengthening Spirit—Releasing Potential: Spiritual Direction for Leadership and Organizational Development(Pickwick, 2021-01-07) Au, Wilkie; Miles, BernadetteHave you ever wondered what releasing spiritual potential in the workplace might do for your organization? In today's climate of colossal and incredibly fast global change, the world needs new ways to develop discerning leaders to consciously lead our community of life into the future. Though there are many books on leadership, they rarely engage the importance and relevance of spiritual development and spiritual accompaniment in organizational discernment and leadership development. Spiritual formation through spiritual direction has the potential to transform the way we lead organizations in secular and religious settings. Drawing on the wisdom and experience of leaders and spiritual directors, this book, first, broadens our understanding of how spiritual direction can be a resource for leadership and organizational development; second, supports spiritual directors in developing their corporate practice and their understanding of the relevance of spiritual direction for a wider community.
- PublicationUnCorinthian Leadership: Thematic Reflections on 1 Corinthians(Wipf & Stock, 2014) Starling, DavidAmid the torrent of books on leadership that flood the marketplace of contemporary Christianity, UnCorinthian Leadership takes a fresh, challenging, and biblical approach. David Starling examines the teaching and leadership practices of Paul in 1 Corinthians, and finds both a sharp critique of the "Corinthianized" practices that are endemic in much modern Western Christianity and a positive, compelling theological vision for how leadership ought to function among the people of Christ. The account of Christian leadership that emerges is grounded in careful, contextual study of 1 Corinthians, and thoughtfully applied to the circumstances and cultural pressures of our own times. Paying close attention to the situation Paul addresses and the shape of his arguments, Starling highlights the vivid relevance and enduring power of the letter. Students of 1 Corinthians will find an illuminating guide to the contemporary application of the letter; Christian leaders and students of leadership will find a refreshingly biblical account of what makes Christian leadership Christian.

- PublicationWe Need a Hundred More Like Him! The Challenge of Catechesis and New Ecclesial Communities(2016) Rymarz, RichardA significant challenge facing the Catholic Church today is the breakdown in traditional catechetical structures such as the close connection between parish, school and family. A consequence of this is a decline in the number of pathways open to Catholics who wish to strengthen their religious commitment. In light of this a pertinent question is: How can new structures support catechesis? This paper explores the role that New Ecclesial Communities (NECs) can play in catechesis in a changed cultural milieu. A number of features of these groups are discussed in relation to supporting plausibility. Some of these features include the establishment of reinforcing boundaries and providing an ongoing sense of involvement in a supportive moral community.
