- Publication“21 Martyrs of Libya”: Presenting Holiness in the Contemporary Coptic Church(Brepols Publishers, 2021) Tumara, NebojsaIn the Coptic tradition, recognition of someone’s holiness is a rather spontaneous process and the Holy Synod of the Church rarely announces new saints. Nevertheless, a new trend has become evident. In 2013 the Church officially canonized Patriarch Cyril VI of Alexandria (1902-1971) and Archdeacon Habib Gerges (1876-1951), and in February 2015, the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria, Tawadros II, canonized twenty-one Coptic Christians, a week after the media of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) uploaded a video onto social media showing their beheading. The video on social media depicting their vivid and horrid staged execution inspired the iconographic presentations of the event. Following the newly established, diverse, and ever-growing iconographical and hagiographical tradition around the newly recognized martyrs of the Church, this paper will examine how holiness is visually constructed in the Coptic Church, in light of the legacy of late professor Isaac Fanous (1919-2007), who established the canons of the Neo-Coptic School of Iconography.

- PublicationA Journey into the Centre of the Psalter(ATF Press, 2005) Reaburn, Mary; O'Brien, Mark; Kelly, MichaelRather than dealing with the shape of the Psalter as a whole, Reaburn focuses on Psalms 73-83 as the centre, and she identifies the theme of hope as the heart of the message of the Psalms. In a detailed vocabulary study, she shows the significance of the word “flock”, and its related words pasturing/ feeding/ shepherding and shepherd. From this study Reaburn explores the image of God as Shepherd of Israel and its expression of future hope based in the memory of Israel as being God’s flock in the past. The image of shepherd and flock encourages hope by connecting with the prophetic traditions of Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Zechariah. Reaburn’s entry is a careful exegetical piece which offers a convincing and satisfying theology that will be useful to all students of this section of the psalms.

In the words of Paul VI the liturgy is the ‘first source of life communicated to us, the first school of our spiritual life, the first gift we can give to Christian people by our believing and praying, and the first invitation to the world.’ That is surely true for all of us.

- PublicationAnalecta Hymnica Coptica: Bohairic Hymns for the Liturgical Year from Medieval Chant Manuscripts(Peeters Publishers, 2023-12-31) Mikhail, RamezAmong the various genres of Coptic liturgical texts, hymnography provides a unique window to Coptic religious culture. This volume presents an edition and translation of a particular genre of Bohairic hymns, each consisting of a hymn (Bōhem) stanza and its accompanying stanzas known as parallax. Compositions of this genre survive for the feasts of Christ, the Virgin Mary, angels, apostles, martyrs, and saints. The present edition is based on more than 20 late medieval and early modern manuscripts of Coptic hymns ranging from the fourteenth to the early-twentieth centuries. The introduction introduces this hymnographic genre, discusses its liturgical context, influence by Coptic literature, and provides a detailed analysis of the manuscripts utilized in this edition. This understudied corpus of Coptic hymnography affords a precious window to the religious experience of Coptic Christians in the second millennium as expressed in Christological feasts and the veneration of saints.
- PublicationAncient Christian Worship: Early Church Practices in Social, Historical, and Theological Perspective(Baker Academic, 2014-10) McGowan, AndrewThis introduction to the origins of Christian worship illuminates the importance of ancient Christian worship practices for contemporary Christianity. - PublicationAustralian Anglicans Remember(Broughton, 2015-10) Sherlock, CharlesMany Australian Christians know little of the many others who, by God’s grace, were effective witnesses to Christ. In the first Australian Anglican prayer book, An Australian Prayer Book (AAPB, 1977), a few local festivals were included – Australia Day (January 26), First Service at Sydney Cove (February 3), Anzac Day (April 25) – but not Australian people. In A Prayer Book for Australia (APBA, 1995), the Calendar included a dozen or more people in whose lives God’s grace was so evident that they are commemorated in some part of this land. It also included some Festivals previously unobserved (e.g. Mary and Joseph) and allocated readings for others (e.g. New Guinea Martyrs). Australian Anglicans Remember covers all Australian and New Zealand commemorations listed in APBA, and festivals not included in AAPB. Each entry includes several sections: • ‘Who was ...?’ (or similar heading) • ‘Commemorations’ lists places where the person’s memory is perpetuated in Australia (where known). • ‘Resources for liturgical use’ include a Service introduction, Sentence(s), Prayer(s) and Readings, chosen or composed to reflect the God-given charisms displayed in the life and ministry of the person(s) concerned.
