The Centrality of the Communicatio Idiomatum For Lutheran Theological Identity
    (Lutheran Theological Journal; 52 (2) ) 2018 Trozzo, Eric
I am becoming more and more convinced in recent years that Lutheran churches would benefit from giving more attention to Martin Luther's interpretation of the 'communicatio idiomatum', or communication of attributes. In my own experience of seminary, this was not a topic that received a great deal of attention. Likewise, many books on Luther's theology give it only a few references. When it is addressed, it is often through a discussion of the ubiquity of the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Yet this is but one implication of a wider strand of Luther's thought. Indeed, Johann Anselm Steiger rightly calls it the 'wheel and motor of Luther's theology' (2000, 125). Further, I am coming to suspect that through it Luther can provide a powerful insight that has relevance for theological issues at least in the Southeast Asian context, and perhaps well beyond it. Thus I suggest that a robust appreciation of the 'communicatio idiomatum' and its implications should be a vital component of a contemporary global sense of Lutheran identity.

The Pastoral Luther as Guide for ‘Experience-Near’ Theology: Reflections from Sabah
(Norsk Tidsskrift for Misjonsvitenskap (Norwegian Journal of Missiology),; 1 (70) ) 2016 Trozzo, Eric
While Lutheran theology is often framed as a set of core theological principles or commitments, Martin Luther’s theology functioned pastorally, engaging specific needs and situations he encountered, with the experience of faith being central. In the terminology of missiologist Robert J. Priest, Luther’s theology is “experience-near.” Thus in seeking to develop a sense of Lutheran identity with the Lutheran churches in the “new” context of Sabah, Malaysia, this essay argues that the pastoral dimension of Luther’s theology should be enlarged, using the process termed “transfiguration” by theologian Vitor Westhelle, rather than starting with theological first principles. This approach allows the theological questions and concerns that emerge from that context to be fore-grounded, rather beginning from an assumption that Luther’s own questions and concerns are universally relevant.

Rupturing Eschatology: Divine Glory and the Silence of the Cross
    2014 Trozzo, Eric
The modern and contemporary legacy of Luther’s theology is a vital topic of continuing investigation, assessment, and construction. Rupturing Eschatology is Eric Trozzo’s constructive retrieval of Luther’s theology of the cross for the purpose of establishing a contemporary Lutheran and “emerging” account of the cross, silence, and eschatology. Seeking to overcome a tendency toward extrinsic notions of divine glory and transformation, the author explores Luther’s early construction of the theology of the cross and divine hiddenness in concert with the work of the Lutheran mystical tradition and modern Lutheran theology, such as Jürgen Moltmann, Paul Tillich, and John Caputo. Trozzo argues for an intra-historical and intra-worldly account of divine possibility oriented around a contemporary theology of the cross marked by reclamation of the biblical and mystical practice of silence as the space that creates hope.
