- PublicationA Christian Ethical Perspective of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the Australian Stock Exchange Top 50 Companies(2010-04-22) Wilson, RichardThis thesis establishes that the Corporate Social Responsibility of the Australian Stock Exchange Top 50 Companies, despite these companies attracting the best talent in the land, and having access to the most resources and having unrivaled econimic and political power, is not of the sophistication and breadth of vision, global reach and concern about the social and econimic welfare of all members of the community that might be expected.
- PublicationCuring and Healing: Vital Elements of Catholic Health Care(2017-11-08) Torres, Eric ManuelIn this research, the significance of curing and healing will be explored with an emphasis on how both are vital to Catholic health care. This essay aims to show that only by embracing both components can health care professionals truly care for the whole person. Moreover, Christian health care professionals ought to follow Christ’s example in order to serve in His mission of caring holistically for those that are ill. As Luke’s account of the Haemorrhoissa (Lk 8:42-48) not only provides a vignette distinguishing between curing and healing, but also an excellent example of how Christ attended to both elements, this essay will interpret this story in order to gain insight into the indispensability of both to whole person Catholic health care. Further, examples extracted form palliative care, an area of health care where curing and healing can be clearly distinguished, will be used to illustrate these elements in practical terms.
- PublicationEnd of life issues: Challenges for Catholic health carers(2014-09) Tran, Nguyen LamEnd-of-life issues are an area where ethics come into play most visibly in medical facilities. A wide range of medical, legal and ethical arguments regarding these issues has become the source of concern in the world, especially when the progress of medicine and biology over the last 50 years has dramatically altered the dying process. As a result, the people who are connected with health care ministry today have to face many challenges, especially those who deal with patients at their end stage of life. Moreover, it is also a challenge with far reaching implications for the Christian tradition. Can people who adhere faithfully to Christian values strive and survive in a society where the secularization of contemporary bioethics has been rapid and deep? The thesis may hopefully contribute in a small part to helping Catholic health carers face the challenges in their profession as well as in faithfully living their faith.
- PublicationStanding Up for Corporate Governance - A Practical Theology Perspective(2008-04-03) Everett, BruceIn the wake of recent corporate failures, the issue of corporate governance has renewed focus. There is an emerging view that governance is less about systems and processes, and more about corporate culture and morality. This view creates a natural entry point for practical theology because it poses the questions of "what ought to be" and "on what basis do I decide what is right?" This research is grounded in the interview data from a sample of people in governance roles in Australian corporations. It uses the Whitehead model of theological reflection as a critical dialogue between the personal experience of the participants and relevant social theory and Christian tradition. The interviews indicated that corporate values are an increasingly important means of guiding corporate behavior and suggested a hierarchy of compliance. The participants proposed that the ultimate guide to ethical behaviour was personal integrity and being able to live with oneself.
